Aranui 5 has had an auspicious launch during Chinese New Year with members of the Wong family, who own Aranui Cruises, travelling from all over the world to China for the cruise freighter’s keel laying ceremony.
Aranui’s Regional Representative Australia New Zealand Laurent Wong was among the family members who attended the technical launch at Huanghai Shipbuilding in China’s northeastern Shandong province.
As well as firecrackers, a bottle of champagne was smashed on the hull at exactly 10.58am on February 8, with 5 and 8 considered lucky and prosperous numbers.
Following the keel laying, Mr Wong confirmed the ship was on track to commence sailing the picturesque waters of the South Pacific in January 2016, replacing Aranui 3 which will be retired after more than 12 years servicing the remote Tuamotu and Marquesas archipelagoes.
With capacity for 256 passengers, the modern Aranui 5 will offer a range of new accommodation options including an increase to 62 balcony suites which will include the operator’s first Superior Deluxe, Presidential and Royal Suites.
Aranui’s 14-day roundtrip cruises from Papeete visit Nuku Hiva, Ua Pou, Tahuata, Fatu Hiva, Hiva Oa, Ua Huka in the Marquesas, Takapoto and Rangiroa in the Tuamotus and the famed Society Island of Bora Bora. The freighter line dispenses a lifeline of food, fuel and other staples to remote island ports while passengers disembark and explore a range of complimentary excursions including hikes, 4WD tours, a visit to the Paul Gauguin museum and a picnic on a secluded beach in Bora Bora.
There will not be an Aranui 4 as the number is considered bad luck by the third generation Tahitian-Chinese family who own the cruise company.
