Wednesday 31st May 2017

New Zealand’s 2016 growth rate of 36% betters Australia.

Cruise Lines International Association Australasia has unveiled its 2016 industry statistics for the New Zealand market with 90,184 Kiwis opting for an ocean cruise last year.

The record increase of 36% on the year previous is only second to China at 89% and pushes Australia into third with 21%.

New Zealand has seen a trebling of the size of the market since 2007 with an impressive average growth rate of 15% per year.

The report shows that the equivalent of 2% of the population took an ocean cruise which indicates market penetration for New Zealand is ahead of more mature markets such as Italy, Spain and France, all around 1%.

The South Pacific was the most popular destination for New Zealanders to cruise with 32,164 passengers followed by domestic cruises at 18,853 passengers then the Mediterranean with 8,553 passengers.
