CW spent its first day in Vienna exploring Schonbrunn Palace. Well worth a visit as a shore excursion or venture there independently. Located about 10-15 minutes by train from the city – use the U4 or Green Line. There are various options of Schonbrunn tickets available – we used the Classic Pass which allowed access to four areas of the palace.
The tour of the palace gives amazing insight into the life of the Habsburgs, who ruled Europe for centuries. Many of the rooms are as they were at the time of the last emperor, Franz Joseph, who reigned until 1916. The palace was the summer residence for Empress Maria Theresa who reigned during the 18th century, and much of the decor and artwork dates back to her time.
Visit the Privy Garden adjacent to the palace, wander under the beautiful arbor, the formal garden and the citrus grove with its many specimens of different fruits.
The classic pass also allows for entry into the Maze and Labyrinth. Don’t get lost meandering around the various mazes, with this part of the garden offering a viewing platform and games for young and old.
We took a walk through the vast landscape of the park to the Gloriette which overlooks the spectacular gardens. The walk uphill takes about 20 minutes but is worth the effort for the amazing views back to the palace and across the city of Vienna. The Classic Pass allows entry to the Panorama Terrace – there are 75 steps! for even better views.
You can spend hours wandering through the extensive garden if time permits.
