Carnival Australia has been
singled out for specific recognition
from Australian Foreign Minister
Julie Bishop for its work with
AusAID in helping to develop
Pacific Island nation economies.
The pact, signed between the
two organisations mid last year
(CW 11 Jul), saw a number of
new initiatives launched including
training of Ni-Vanuatu staff to
work with visiting cruise ships
and courses for market vendors.
Bishop cited efforts by Carnival
to source a number of its onboard
products from island communities
such as bottled water and coffee
from local Vanuatu suppliers.
“Taxi drivers, coffee shops and
local tourism operators, fruit and
vegetable growers on a lot of the
islands all have the potential to
benefit when connected to the
tourism supply chain,” Bishop said.
Carnival Australia ceo Ann
Sherry said the Minister’s words
were encouraging & an indication
its efforts were being noticed.
“One of the most satisfying
elements of the stunning growth
of cruising in recent years is the
opportunity it has provided to
work with island communities to
build an economic future around
this surge in tourism.
“Vanuatu is an important
destination for Carnival Australia
and we would like to continue to
grow this market,” Sherry added.
