HOLIDAYMAKERS onboard Aurora Expedition’s
Akademik Shokalskiy were the first to sail into
Commonwealth Bay for the centenary of Sir
Douglas Mawson’s Antarctic expedition.
Shokalskiy made it to Commonwealth Bay on
10 January, two days and 100 years after it is
estimated that Mawson landed.
“The expedition team and all of our 48
passengers are ecstatic that we have actually
arrived to celebrate and pay tribute to our
Antarctic hero. It has been an amazing feat to
finally reach Commonwealth Bay, but we did
it!,” said Expedition Leader, Roger Kirkwood.
