THE Cruise Lines International Association
(CLIA), a North American cruise industry
organisation made up of 26 member cruise
lines, has announced it will undertake a Cruise
Industry Operational Safety Review.
The review comes in the wake of the recent
Costa Concordia tragedy, and will see all 26
CLIA cruise line members internally review
their own operational safety practices and
procedures concerning issues of navigation,
evacuation, emergency training and related
practices and procedures.
The review will include consultation with
independent experts; will identify and share
industry best practices and policies, as well as
possible recommendations to the
International Maritime Organisation (IMO) for
substantive regulatory changes to further
improve the industry’s operational safety; and
will see CLIA collaborate with the IMO,
governments and regulatory bodies to
implement any necessary regulatory changes.
