THE United Nations’ International Maritime
Organisation has agreed to develop worldwide
guidelines relating to crime at sea.
The guidelines, which will also address
missing persons at sea, are the result of a joint
proposal by authorities in the UK and the
Philippines, as well as The Cruise Lines
International Association.
Key features of the proposal revolve around
the preservation of evidence, medical and
pastoral care for victims; effective and timely
reporting to governments; and cooperation
between governments with regard to
investigations.
According to a statement by CLIA, during the
development of the guidelines, IMO members
will take into account variations of shipping,
ensuring that regulations are proportionate for
different ship types.
Work on the guidelines is set to commence
immediately and will be headed up by the UK
in collaboration with other IMO member states.
