First ever naming ceremony for a new cruise ship in Sydney Harbour.
Aurora Expeditions has just celebrated the arrival of its third vessel, with the custom-designed Douglas Mawson joining the Greg Mortimer and Sylvia Earle in the fleet.
It’s believed to be the first time a brand new cruise vessel has been christened in Australia, with the historic moment commemorated in front of a stunning Sydney Harbour background.
The company’s founder, Greg Mortimer, gave an emotional welcome to guests, reminiscing that the now 35-year-old company had “returned home” to where it started from an office in George Street, Sydney.
A host of dignitaries enjoyed a tour of the vessel this morning before the ceremonial smashing of a block of ice on the bow at the Overseas Passenger Terminal by the ship’s godmother, Emma McEwin.
