THE average American cruiser is younger,
smarter and richer than you may think.
According to a new survey by the Cruise Lines
International Association (CLIA) in the US, the
general profile of a 2011 cruise passenger is
“upscale”, with a median household income
of US$97,000 and a median age of 48.
CLIA describes itself as the world’s biggest
cruising organisation, and is dedicated to
the promotion and growth of the industry.
About 76% of cruise passengers are
university graduates, CLIA says.
Approximately 80% of cruisers travel with a
spouse, 33% with kids, 19% with friends and
18% with other family members.
Two in five consumers have sailed as part of a
group or event, the survey also found.
CLIA says 73 million Americans have gone on
at least one cruise in their lives and 36.1
million are “likely” to take another cruise
within the next three years.
