AN initial investigation by the Australian Transport Safety Bureau (ATSB) has found Norwegian Star suffered three separate propulsion unit failures over a period of about nine weeks between Dec last year and Feb 2017.
In line with Norwegian Cruise Line’s statements at the time of the malfunctions, the ATSB said one azipod system broke down in Dec and the other in Jan.
Rather than pulling the ship from service to replace the units, Norwegian Cruise Line decided to modify and repair them.
The third failure was due to a modification made to the unit which broke down first.
The investigation is ongoing.
