PASSENGERS ONBOARD ROYAL CARIBBEAN’S
Independence of the Seas have suffered
minor injuries following an explosion beside
the vessel as she was preparing to depart the
port of Gibraltar in the UK yesterday.
According to Royal Caribbean all 10
passengers who were physically affected by
the blast have subsequently received medical
treatment from Independence’s onboard
facilities, whilst the only two guests who were
onshore when the blast happened are
currently being looked after by RCI’s Care Team.
The explosion itself is reported to have
occurred in a fuel tank which was positioned
on the dock, although it is not yet known
what caused it to go up in flames.
The cruise line confirmed that, for safety
reasons, immediately following the blast
Independence withdrew its gangway and
moved “a safe distance from the dock”.
Independence is currently on a 14-night
itinerary that departed Southampton,
England on Saturday 28 May.
