One Ocean Expeditions (OOE), a leading adventure cruise operator is seeing a significant increase in family travel to the Canadian Arctic and Canada’s Atlantic coast with the introduction of its new youth pricing and shorter cruise itineraries.
In search of new bonding experiences and educational opportunities, families now travel further afield to destinations that were once perceived inaccessible. That perception is slowly changing with operators such One Ocean Expeditions who recognizes the importance of family travel and the positive impact it has on youth and development of sustainable travel practices. “OOE’s commitment to share remote destinations through photography, wildlife, culture and education is something we are very proud of, in addition to making our vision extremely rewarding”, says Catherine Lawton, General Manager at OOE.
The Arctic appeals to families for many reasons, most importantly for viewing wildlife such as polar bears, whales and seals from both the ship and smaller zodiac landing craft. Special family itineraries incorporate ‘hands on’ educational activities in the field, with binoculars and journals provided for youngsters; a mini lab in which specimens can be viewed under a microscope, plus social events including a movie night with popcorn, a games night and on-deck identification of wildlife. Presentation staff will have versions of their talks on wildlife, photography and history designed for a younger audience, with the aim of stimulating and engaging youth in the wonders of these unique regions.
Families can expect to learn about early explorers during their voyage, see hundreds of seabirds, amongst other wildlife as well as experience zodiac excursions, not only to get up close to the abundant wildlife but also to visit traditional communities.
Another and very important factor is the affordability of the cruise experience, considering the travel distance. OOE’s introduction of a 25% booking incentive for youth up to 17 years, and 20% for those aged 18-21 years, (in full time education) can assist in keeping travel within the family budget. The new pricing structure is applicable to all adventure cruise expeditions offered by One Ocean Expeditions.
