VIKING RIVER CRUISES HAS REVEALED IT WILL
launch four new state-of-the-art vessels at
the start of its 2012 sailing season, Viking
Freya, Viking Idun, Viking Njord and Viking Odin.
Designed by renowned maritime architects
Yran & Storbraaten, the vessels are set to
become the first in a new class of vessel
titled Viking Longships, with their main
defining feature being their “long and
graceful design” (said to embody the spirit of
the ancient Scandinavian vessels).
Creating more guest space is paramount
to the vessels design, with Viking saying they
will boast the “largest real suites in Europe”
(with separate living and sleeping spaces in
each of their Explorer and Veranda Suites),
as well as more full-size rooms and verandahs
than any other European river ship.
As such, each of the vessels will feature two
Explorer Suites (445 square-feet and private
wraparound verandah with 270-degree
views); seven 270-square-foot Verandah
Suites (with full-size verandahs and French
balconies); 39 Verandah Staterooms (with
205-square-foot verandahs); as well as
sustainability upgrades including energyefficient
engines, solar panels and an
onboard organic herb garden.
Three-quarters of each of the vessels
staterooms will also feature either a verandah,
French balcony, or in some instances, both.
All four vessels will also feature alfresco
dining areas on their Upper deck.
Viking Freya, Viking Idun, Viking Njord and
Viking Odin are slated to sail four Viking
itineraries, including the 10-day Tulips and
Windmills cruise, eight-day Romantic
Danube voyage, 15-day Grand European
Tour and eight-day Danube Waltz.
