The long-planned cruise ship
terminal at Hobart’s Macquarie
Wharf Number Two last week
took a big step forward, with
Tasports flagging a $7m upgrade.
THE project has been in the planning for
some years, and in an announcement on
Friday, Tasports ceo Paul Weedon said the
development will see the creation of new
cruise ship facilities as well as a base for
Antarctic operations at the wharf (pictured).
Weedon said the project would also
reconfigure transport arrangements
for tour buses and taxis, making it
much easier for passengers.
“This is a remarkable development
for Tasmania, which is fitting as we
welcome substantial growth in cruise
ship visits for the coming season and
prepare to celebrate Antarctic
exploration with the upcoming
centenary event,” said Tasports
chairman Dr Dan Norton.
Plans will be finalised over the next two
months, with building hoped to commence in
May at the end of the upcoming cruise season
during which Hobart will welcome more than
75,000 cruise visitors.
Peak cruise industry body Cruise Down
Under welcomed the move, with general
manager Jill Abel saying: “The deep water
harbour, proximity to the city centre,
accessibility to a variety of quality touring
experiences, along with its maritime history,
make Hobart a highly attractive destination for
cruise shipping.”
