THE FORTY YEAR OLD MV OCEAN STAR PACIFIC HAS
encountered problems off the coast of
Huatulco, Mexico, after a generator fire over
the weekend forced the evacuation of 522
passengers and 226 crew.
According to reports no one was injured in
the fire, however the vessel was left stranded
six miles off the coast of Huatulco whilst
waiting for a tow into the Mexican port for
repairs.
Ocean Star Pacific is currently operated by
the Mexican cruise company, Ocean Star
Cruise Line, and was first launched in 1971
as Royal Caribbean’s Nordic Prince, before
being sold to Sun Cruises in 1995 and
renamed MV Carousel.
In July 2004 Carousel was sold to Louis
Cruise Line and in 2005 was relaunched
under the name MV Aquamarine, before
being sold to Ocean Star in 2010.
Earlier in the year Ocean Star Pacific
received an extensive refurbishment, and
now targets the Mexican cruise market.
As yet the cause of her generator fire is
unknown, however the Mexican Secretariat
of Communications and Transport has said it
will conduct a thorough investigation into
the incident.
