MARITIME HISTORY REVEALED.
Newly-released files from the annals of
British intelligence agency MI5, have
revealed Nazi Germany planned to attack
the US during ‘Operation Pastorius’ in
June 1942.
However the commencement of
operations, spearheaded by a submarine
mission, was plagued with disasters,
making the mission more of a farce than
a foreunner to invasion.
Firstly one of the German spies
travelling in the submarine, got drunk in
a Parisian bar on the evening before
departure, and blew his cover by telling
everyone he was a spy.
Then upon arrival in US waters after a
long journey from Europe, the submarine
ran aground on a sandbar and had to
drop its four spy cargo off on the coast of
New York’s Long Island.
The four spies were then discovered by
a US coast guard whilst burying supplies,
however managed to evade authorities
after giving the guard US$300 and
asking him to leave them alone.
“It was only owing to the laziness or
stupidity of the American coastguards
that this submarine was not attacked by
USA forces,” the report said.
But it doesn’t end there, the lead spy
then called the FBI, announced he was a
spy and demanded to speak to J Edgar
Hoover, following which the group were
arrested.
THE LAKE OFFERS UP ITS SICK FOR HEALING.
An endangered Rafetus swinhoei turtle
has been rescued by experts in Hanoi,
Vietnam, after reports surfaced that it
was suffering from a number of nasty sores.
Weighing around 200kgs, and the size
of a car door, the turtle has been a
regular sight in Vietnamese waters, most
often frequenting a lake in the heart of
the country’s capital.
The turtle first raised alarm when it
began to pop up more than usual, sporting
pink sores on its body, neck and head.
It took more than 24 people including
armed forces personnel to capture the
turtle for medical attention, with experts
blaming pollution and fishing for the
centurion’s current condition.
