FANS of Australian Idol, the X Factor and
Australia’s Got Talent will be thrilled to
hear of a new UK reality TV show which is
searching for the next big thing in cruise
ship entertainment.
Named Showboaters, the program was
shot on board British liner Thomson
Dream in the Caribbean, with performers
battling for a full-time role on the ship’s
entertainment team.
Participants came from a wide range of
backgrounds, with two eliminated every
week for three weeks by (of course) a
passenger vote in conjunction with a
panel of judges.
The contestants also had to learn about
life on board, working in different jobs
around the week between gigs.
The finished eight-part program which
culminates in a grand finale with four
finalists, debuts in the UK next month.
A SPECIAL naval force backed by the
European Union and operating to help
stamp out piracy in the African nation of
Somalia is advertising a unique job, with
the title of ‘Pirate Cultural Advisor’.
The European Union Naval Force
Somalia, which goes by the not-so-catchy
shorthand name of Eunavfor, says the
successful applicant will provide the
operation’s commander with “pirate
cultural and religious advice, and in
particular to advise on pirate trends and
weaknesses”.
Those going for the job are likely to
require military experience as well as
being eligible for top secret security
clearance, an official said.
The force is hoping to crack down on a
worrying trend among the pirates to use
more vicious methods including torture
and the execution of hostages.
Duties of the advisor will include
working to develop possible pirate cases
for prosecution, gathering information on
negotiations for ships being held by
pirates, and “giving guidance on pirate
culture to the European Union”.
