Captain Cook Cruises is delighted to announce the appointment of Terry Salmond as Master of the PS Murray Princess, operating three, four and seven night cruises along the Murray River.
Captain Terry returns to the Murray Princess after previously being Master for 6 years from 2002 until 2008.
In fact, working on the Murray Princess runs in the family, with Captain Terry originally coming to Adelaide from Ipswich, Queensland in 1993 to visit his father, who was working as a chef on the ship. Terry ended up moving to South Australia a month later.
“I still tell people I’m here on a two-week holiday that started 20 years ago.” says Captain Terry.
After settling in South Australia, Captain Terry joined his dad and was employed on the Murray Princess for the next 14 years, even meeting his wife Lucy onboard who was the leading hand in the ships dining room.
Captain Terry started off on the Murray Princess washing dishes, cleaning cabins and working on decks until obtaining his Master 4 certificate and being promoted to Master in 2002.
In 2008, Captain Terry and Lucy moved to Launceston, Tasmania where Terry studied Marine Engineering and secured a cadetship with Teekay Shipping Australia. He then obtained his engineer watch keepers certificate and over the next seven years worked third and second engineer on a variety of vessels.
In 2012 Captain Terry, Lucy and their three children moved back to Adelaide, where Terry maintained his employment with Teekay Shipping Australia before accepting a position as Master of the Murray Princess with Captain Cook Cruises once again in 2016.
“I have always enjoyed working on the Murray, as the river and its people feel like a family, and it is one of the most magnificent places I have seen. In addition to this, I love the opportunity to meet guests from all over the world, and working with some amazing crew members.
I hope to be able to encourage our crew to achieve all they are capable of, and more, and to ensure that the Murray Princess remains a relaxing, enjoyable world class experience for our guests.” Explains Captain Terry Salmond.
