IT WAS A BIT OF A STORM-IN-A-TEACUP FOR ORION
Expeditions after its newest fleet member,
fresh from being delivered and on her
inaugural voyage, encountered a 7.3
magnitude earthquake whilst sailing in the
Aleutian Islands (North Pacific Ocean).
Striking 64kms SW off Amukta Island,
Alaska, the earthquake was swiftly followed
by official tsunami warnings.
According to reports, Orion II was around
26 miles from the epicentre of the quake.
Onboard guests and crew reported
noticeable shuddering, however perhaps in
testament to the sturdy character of the
vessel, there were no injuries to anyone
onboard and an inspection of the ship’s
tanks and void areas revealed no signs of
leakage, whilst all systems were found to be
working normally.
According to reports no Aleutian Island
residents were hurt during the quake, and
the tsunami warning has since been cancelled.
Having suffered no damage, Orion II is
continuing her voyage to Adak, with all
passengers having been advised of the
earthquake’s occurrence.
