Commercial agreement will see new facility operating within two years.
Carnival Australia and the Port of Brisbane have just confirmed a new commercial agreement which will see the new Brisbane International Cruise Terminal at Luggage Point operating by mid-2020.
The amended deal follows the ACCC’s conditional approval of the project last month, with Carnival and the Port having “agreed a way forward in the best interests of the cruise industry, Queensland tourism and the state’s economy”.
The long-term agreement sees Carnival Australia committing to purchase a maximum of 100 ‘foundation’ berthing days of no more than four in any week for 15 years to underwrite the construction. In return, Carnival Australia receives priority berthing rights at the terminal.
“This decision means Port of Brisbane will now get on with the job of building the terminal, which is a key plank of Queensland’s tourism growth story,” said Port of Brisbane ceo Roy Cummins.
Sture Myrmell, president of Carnival Australia said the agreement “means Brisbane can take its place on the world cruising map”.
