TRAVELLERS visiting a foreign port and
having difficulty communicating with locals
can help bridge the linguistic gap via a new
translation app launched by Celebrity Cruises.
In what it claims as an “industry first”, the
app allows users to speak or type in an English
phrase, at which point the foreign translation
appears on screen, with formal or slang options
available via an interactive phrase book.
Eighty standard phrases in 11 languages are
available in the free version of the app, along
with 56 cruise-related phrases, with additional
languages via one of three add-on packs able
to be bought within the app.
It also offers a flashcard learning system to
help those keener on developing their local
language skills.
Travel tips, dining guides, country information,
safety advice and hints on general etiquette
are also available from the new program.
