Cruise lines are yet to confirm
involvement in London’s
2012 Olympic Games.
DURING THE OLYMPICS PERIOD NEXT YEAR, CRUISE
ships were expected to serve as ‘floating
hotels’ to help boost the number of beds for
tourists in London, but so far there is only
one option.
German line, Peter Deilmann, will berth
the MS Deutschland at West India Docks,
near the Olympic stadium, offering three
nights’ accommodation for £4,336 per
person – not including entry to sporting
events.
The 298-cabin art deco-style ship offered
similar facilities in Greece during the Athens
Games in 2008.
Azamara Club Cruises is believed to be
waiting on approval to have one of its ships
docked on the Thames, but nothing has
been confirmed.
“Azamara continues to discuss various
options with the organisers of the London
Olympics,” a company spokesperson told
Cruise Weekly.
SeaDream Yacht Club recently gave up its
search for an Olympics charter and last
week announced a replacement program for
Europe, adding longer Mediterranean
voyages and new itineraries in Turkey,
Greece, Croatia and the Black Sea.
“Given that our most consistently popular
destination is the Mediterranean, it made
the most sense to fill the demand there,
rather than keep chasing an Olympic charter,”
said Julie Denovan, SeaDream’s Director of
Business Development in Australia.
Other lines, such as Silversea, will have
ships in the UK at the time but with no
specific Olympics plans.
The Olympic Games are scheduled to take
place in London from 27 July until 12
August 2012.
