In the same year Australia reached one million cruise passengers, P&O Cruises reached a milestone million of its own, serving one million espresso coffees to coffee loving Australian and New Zealand guests across its three-ship fleet in 2014.
The coffee statistic is just one on a list of equally impressive figures compiled by Corporate Executive Chef Uwe Stiefel, which shows the vast quantities of food P&O Cruises buys in a typical year of ship turnarounds.
The amazing quantities ordered by P&O Cruises last year include: 420,000 kilograms (kg) of flour; 120,000 kg of sugar; 1.7 million kg of fresh vegetables; 1.2 million kg of fresh fruit; 16,000 kg of jams and marmalades; 200,000 litres of New Zealand ice cream; 80,000 kg of cheese; 800,000 individual yoghurts; 500,000 litres of milk; 380,000 kg of fish and seafood; 500,000 kg of beef; 40,000 kg of Tassie salmon and 600,000 kg of poultry.
The figures highlight the long value chain of cruising and show primary producers are among the many that benefit from cruising and its growth.
A CLIA commissioned study showed that in 2013 the cruise industry – the most successful sector of Australian tourism – generated more than $3.2 billion in total economic activity in Australia, a figure that with the industry’s continued double digit annual growth is this year, likely to top $3.8 billion in economic benefit.
