ONE hundred years and going strong.
New Zealand’s TSS Earnslaw (aka Lady of
the Lake) is getting set to celebrate her
100th birthday this year on 18 October.
Launched in 1912, the historic steamship
started life carrying goods, livestock and
people between Queenstown and Kingston
on Lake Wakatipu, quickly becoming a
lifeline and earning herself the nickname
Lady of the Lake.
In 1968 the Lady was saved from scrappage
by Real Journeys, and since then she has
carried tourists (including Queen Elizabeth)
around the Lake to visit various attractions.
Prior to her centenary the Lady is due
for an overhaul to get her in “prime condition”
for her birthday celebrations, which will
include a re-enactment of her first cruise.
